The increase in the volume of traffic in 2022 compared to the same period in 2021 on the road from Podgorica to Kolašin and the reduced number of traffic accidents show that the construction of the highway, in addition to other socio-economic effects, had a significant effect on reducing the risk of traffic accidents, as announced by the Ministry of Capital Investments of the Government of Montenegro.

The Smokovac-Mateševo section, on the Bar-Boljare highway, was put into operation on July 14, while toll collection and recording of traffic volumes began on July 21.

As pointed out in the announcement, the construction of the highway in the section from Podgorica to Kolašin generated 18 percent more new traffic compared to the same period in 2021. Additional traffic after the construction of the highway did not increase the total number of traffic accidents, but there was a decrease in the trend of the total number of accidents with fatalities, injured persons, and material damage, the announcement states.

The Ministry states that the increase in the average speed on the M-2 Podgorica-Kolašin highway, which occurred after the reduction of traffic flow by putting the highway into operation, did not increase the number of traffic accidents, but rather slowed down the trend from the first months of 2022.
