Durrës will be the new Monaco in ten years, according to the Albanian government, which announced two new projects. One is the construction of a new pier and a luxury settlement in Durrës on the site of the current port, and the other is the construction of a new commercial port in the Porto Romano settlement, according to reports on investor.me.

Both locations are only 150 kilometers from the Montenegrin Port of Bar, which is gaining strong competition with this project.

The largest port in this part of the world and the most modern settlement will be built by "Eagle Hills" from the United Arab Emirates. Durrës will have a new marina for ships and yachts, a neighborhood of 12,000 luxury houses and apartments, eight four-star and five-star hotels, and landscaped public areas.

"Almost half of the area, where the port, containers, and various waste are now, will be turned into an urban environment with squares, parks, and playgrounds for children. The government of Albania is participating in the financing of this project," said Erlis Hareni, executive director of the Albanian Sea Ports Development Company.

The government of Albania is launching another project worth 390 million euros, 46 percent of which will be financed by the state and 54 percent of which will be invested by a company that will be selected in an international tender.

The cargo port in Durres is moving to Porto Romano, a small town close to the city. It will be a strategic hub for trade in the Western Balkans. It will create 1,500 jobs.

The project for the new commercial port foresees the construction of dry ports in Pristina, Skopje, and other cities, as well as the construction of road and railway infrastructure on that route, which is part of Corridor 8.

"We will have the repositioning of all Albanian ports to the interior of the Balkans—by rail to Priština and further to Niš and Belgrade, as well as via Corridor 8 to Skopje. According to the agreement from the summit in Tirana, the road and railway infrastructure on this important route will be financed with the funds of the European Union," said Vengu.

New port Porto Romano was designed by one of the five most prestigious companies in the world. It is planned that it will be the largest commercial port on the Adriatic, and one part of it should become a NATO base, according to RTS.
