After two years of planning, the foundation stone was laid for a new housing project in Vienna's 22nd district, Donaustadt. It is an innovative example of affordable housing with a high quality of life, which will be realized on a large plot of land near bus and subway stations, as well as educational institutions and recreational areas. The project includes a dozen buildings with 557 subsidized apartments, 31 business premises, a kindergarten, a health facility and green areas for socializing and playing.

The residential complex, called Campo Breitenlee, is an innovative energy complex that produces energy exclusively from renewable sources. Energy will be produced locally and in a larger range on an annual basis than will be able to be consumed. CO2 emissions will be reduced to zero. This will be made possible by deep drilling, thermal activation of the building structure, wells, high-efficiency heat pumps and a photovoltaic system. Building envelopes will reduce the need for energy and create a pleasant, naturally air-conditioned interior space. As pointed out by Jürgen Czernohorszky, a member of the Vienna Climate Authority, the City of Vienna has taken important steps in the direction of environmentally friendly energy supply in the last few years, and the new project is a major contribution to a future without fossil fuels.

Greening of facades and roofs, as well as planting lawns, flower beds and fruit trees will ensure natural cooling and a pleasant microclimate. Thus, in the center of the complex there will be a park with benches and places to socialize, and residents will have the opportunity to engage in urban gardening. The buildings will have common and multifunctional spaces with canteens. The settlement will have children's and sports playgrounds. A special focus was also placed on intergenerational solidarity and good neighborly relations.

The concept should be implemented in 2024.
